How to Tell the Difference Between Hass and Shepard Avocados
Avocados are a popular, versatile fruit, but with several varieties available, it can be tricky to know which one to choose. The Hass and Shepard avocados are two of the most common varieties, each offering unique characteristics.
Skin Colour: One of the most noticeable differences is the skin colour. The skin of a Shepard avocado remains green, even when ripe, while the skin of a Hass avocado changes from green to purplish-black as it ripens.
Flesh Texture: Shepard avocados have a firmer, yellower flesh, which makes them perfect for slicing. This firmness prevents the flesh from browning once cut, making them a popular choice for salads or sliced on toast. In contrast, Hass avocados have a softer, creamier texture that’s ideal for guacamole or spreading.
Flavour: The flavour of a Shepard avocado is slightly nuttier compared to the creamy, buttery taste of a Hassavocado.
Nutritional Benefits: Both varieties are equally nutritious, offering the same health benefits, including healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.

How to Choose the Perfect Shepard Avocado
Since the skin of a Shepard avocado doesn’t change colour as it ripens, choosing the perfect one might seem challenging. But there’s a simple trick: press gently near the top of the fruit. If it gives a little, it’s ready to eat.
If your Shepard avocado isn’t quite ripe, leave it on the kitchen bench for 1-3 days to ripen, or place it in a paper bag with a banana to speed up the process. Once ripe, you can pop it in the fridge to maintain the perfect ripeness for 2-3 days.
